Salicin is a phenol β-glucoside obtained from willow bark and has anti-inflammatory effects. Salicin is a prodrug that is gradually transported to the lower part of the intestine, where it is hydrolyzed by intestinal bacteria to salicyl alcohol and converted to salicylic acid after absorption. Thus, it produces antipyretic effect without causing stomach injury.

With its antipyretic and analgesic effects, salicin was used in the past for the treatment of rheumatic diseases, but has been replaced by other drugs. Because it can produce salicyl alcohol after hydrolysis, it can be easily oxidized to produce salicylic acid, so it was once the main source of synthetic salicylic acid drugs, and now the pharmaceutical industry has adopted synthetic method to manufacture salicylic acid.
